Astros relief pitcher Ryne Stanek helped treat four Houston dads to a $500 shopping spree for Father’s Day at the Academy Sports and Outdoors on Westheimer near The Galleria area on Tuesday afternoon.

The dads, who were suprised by their children with the shopping spree and even more surprised when Stanek walked in the store, were selected by i9 Sports as fathers who volunteer in their leagues and go above and beyond for their kids and the other kids in the sports programs.

“I was like a lot of these kids; they’re fortunate enough to have their dad be a part of their sports career and their lives like that and I was, too,” Stanek said. “This is definitely something that tugs on my heart a little. You want to show your pops that you love him and that you’re proud of him.”

This will be a special Father’s Day for Stanek, who, along with his wife Jessica, welcomed their first child – Joelle – into the world last September.

“It’s definitely really neat,” Stanek said. “I’ve always been super close with my pops and this year being my first Father’s Day it’s a really cool feeling.”

The 30-year-old Stanek, who is making $2.1 million this season, is in his second year with the Astros and is one of the team’s most reliable arms out of the bullpen. He went 3-5 with a 3.42 ERA and two saves last season, then gave up just three runs in 13 appearances in the postseason. He’s given up just two runs in 19 innings (0.95 ERA) this season
