Doc Hosea Invite Ahead for Navy Women’s Rowing

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women’s rowing program will continue its stretch of early season action on Sunday at the 2022 Doc Hosea Invite. Competing on the Cooper River starting at 7:50 a.m., the Mids will have five crews entered in morning qualifying heats before the finals begin at 10:30 a.m.

The field for the Doc Hosea Invitational consists of seven teams that are ranked or are receiving votes in the CRCA Coaches Top-20 Poll: No. 10 Rutgers, No. 13 Syracuse, R/V Navy, R/V Northeastern, R/V Notre Dame, R/V Penn and R/V Tulsa. Additionally, 11 teams from the Big 10, Atlantic 10, CAA, Ivy League and Patriot League will be competing.

The Mids will be busy throughout the day with 10 opportunities to race on the Cooper River. Navy’s first varsity eight will be first up at 7:50 a.m. in a heat against Syracuse, Columbia, Cornell, George Washington and Temple. 30 minutes later, the Mids’ second varsity eight will race in its heat against Syracuse, Tulsa, Cornell, George Washington and UMass. The first varsity four boat will be next up at 8:50 a.m. in a heat versus Syracuse, Cornell, Columbia, Temple and George Washington. The Mids’ 2V4 and 3V8 will conclude the initial round of racing, hitting the water at 9:00 and 9:40 a.m. After a short break, the finals begin at 10:30 a.m. and are scheduled to wrap up at 12:50 p.m. with the grand finals of the third varsity eight.

The winner of each heat, as well as the crews with the next three fastest times will advance to the grand final, while the next six fastest times will move onto the petite final. The remaining teams will participate in the third final.

This will be the fifth straight Doc Hosea Invitational that the Mids will be competing. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 regattas, Navy will be looking to improve on its fourth place result from 2019. All five of Navy’s boats that were entered in the 2019 event made grand finals with the Mids’ second varsity four leading the way with a second-place finish. As a team, Navy placed fourth overall with 84 points. Rutgers, Syracuse and Minnesota held off Navy to finish up on the podium. The Mids’ V8 entry finished fourth in its grand final with a time of 6:42.50.
