Thompson Headlines Navy Men’s Tennis All-League Award Recipients

BETHLEHEM, Pa. –– Led by player-of-the-year honoree Derrick Thompson (Sr., Towson, Md.), the Navy men’s tennis team tied a program high by having four members of the team earn All-Patriot League accolades this year.  The announcement of the teams, which additionally included head coach Chris Garner being named the coach of the year and the duo of Thompson and Sasha Panyan (So., Lutherville, Md.) selected as the doubles team of the year, was made Thursday by the league office.

Navy set a school record for victories in a season this year with the team’s overall mark of 32-11.  The Mids won the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth year in a row in which the event was contested.  Navy went on to face No. 15 North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, during which the Mids won the doubles point.  It marked the first point recorded by a Patriot League team in the NCAA Tournament since the Mids earned one point –– a singles win by Mitch Koch — against Mississippi in 1999, which was the first year the tournament included automatic berths for all conferences.

Garner earned the coach-of-the-year award for the fifth time in his eight seasons (seven possible awards due to the cancellation of the 2020 season).  He has guided Navy to five league titles, a combined 56-5 regular season and tournament record against league foes and to victories in the team’s last 37 matches against league opponents.

Thompson received the player-of-the-year award for the first time in his career.  He previously was named the league’s rookie of the year in 2019 and earned the tournament MVP award in 2019 and ’22.  Thompson also garnered first-team all-league honors this season, giving him three first-team nods in his career.  He posted a 21-10 overall record in singles this year, a mark that included a 15-5 record at No. 1 singles during dual matches.  Thompson compiled a 23-11 record in doubles, which featured a 17-6 record in dual matches.  He was a combined 38-5 in career matches against league opponents.

The team of Thompson and Panyan posted a 13-5 record this season, which included an 11-4 record while playing at the No. 1 flight in dual matches.  The tandem capped its season by recording 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles in the NCAA Tournament against North Carolina’s Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger, a pair that was ranked 16th nationally and had received an invite to this year’s NCAA Doubles Tournament.

Panyan himself received second-team all-league accolades this year.  The league’s 2021 rookie of the year and part of the last season’s doubles team of the year (with Andrew Ton) ended this season with a singles record of 27-10 and a doubles record of 20-9.  Those overall marks included dual-match records of 18-4 in singles and 17-7 in doubles.  Panyan also totaled a combined 14-3 record against league competition.

Gavin Segraves (Jr., Charlottesville, Va.) joined Thompson in earning first-team all-league accolades.  He compiled overall records of 23-11 in singles and 20-9 in doubles.  Segraves posted dual match records of 16-6 in singles  –– 12-5 at the No. 2 flight –– and 15-7 in doubles, which included a combined record of 12-2 against league foes.

Finn Garner (Jr., Arnold, Md.) received second-team all-league honors for the second year in a row.  He ended this season with a 21-8 record in singles and a 25-5 record in doubles.  Those marks included records of 16-3 in singles and 19-3 in doubles during the spring dual match campaign.  Garner posted a combined record of 8-1 in matches against Patriot League opposition.

Navy previously had four all-league honorees under the current format established with the 2003 awards in 2007, ’09 and ’10.
